THE AMERICAN ACADEMY OF PHARMACEUTICAL PHYSICIANS CODE OF ETHICS FOR THE PRACTICE OF PHARMACEUTICAL MEDICINE

~PREAMBLE~

The American Academy of Pharmaceutical Physicians (AAPP) Code of Ethics for the Practice of Pharmaceutical Medicine complements the Academy’s Mission, Objectives and Purpose.1

The AAPP Code of Ethics sets the standard of conduct and behavior for AAPP members responsible for medical considerations in pharmaceutical and medical device research and development, and post-marketing product safety surveillance.

The Code describes the principles that guide ethical decision-making to ensure that the best interests of patients and study participants, as well as their families, doctors, nurses and other health care professionals, are served. The Code seeks to assure safe use of medical products.

The Code establishes a standard for addressing ethical dilemmas in pharmaceutical research and its applications.

~ THE AAPP CODE OF ETHICS~

Members of the American Academy of Pharmaceutical Physicians (AAPP) accept the fundamental responsibility to:

  • Give first priority to the well being of participants in research studies and patients who use pharmaceutical products and medical devices.
  • Ensure that potential risks to clinical study participants are minimized, that these risks are fully evaluated against potential benefits, and that potential risks and benefits are clearly communicated to study participants and their physicians.
  • Apply sound ethical values and judgment in the design, conduct and analysis of clinical studies, and in the interpretation of results.
  • Adhere to the principles of good clinical practice and research.
  • Support the dissemination only of scientifically sound information from clinical trials and other investigations, without regard to study outcomes, for the benefit of medicine and science.
  • Ensure that all industry-based, medically relevant product information is fair, balanced, accurate, comprehensive and easily accessible, in order that patients and physicians can make well-informed decisions about the use of pharmaceuticals and medical devices.
  • Strive to understand and respect differences in values across cultures and to appropriately adapt behaviors while maintaining ethical principles.
  • Foster the education and professional competence of AAPP members, to enable them to uphold ethical principles in the practice of pharmaceutical medicine.
  • Appropriately question, consult and advise each other regarding medical and ethical concerns, and to seek external opinions, as appropriate, in the best interests of patients and clinical study participants.
