THE AMERICAN ACADEMY OF PHARMACEUTICAL PHYSICIANS CODE OF ETHICS FOR THE PRACTICE OF PHARMACEUTICAL MEDICINE ~PREAMBLE~ The American Academy of Pharmaceutical Physicians (AAPP) Code of Ethics for the Practice of Pharmaceutical Medicine complements the Academy’s Mission, Objectives and Purpose.1 The AAPP Code of Ethics sets the standard of conduct and behavior for AAPP members responsible for medical considerations in pharmaceutical and medical device research and development, and post-marketing product safety surveillance. The Code describes the principles that guide ethical decision-making to ensure that the best interests of patients and study participants, as well as their families, doctors, nurses and other health care professionals, are served. The Code seeks to assure safe use of medical products. The Code establishes a standard for addressing ethical dilemmas in pharmaceutical research and its applications. ~ THE AAPP CODE OF ETHICS~ Members of the American Academy of Pharmaceutical Physicians (AAPP) accept the fundamental responsibility to:
Adopted by the AAPP Board of Trustees 14 October 2001 1. MISSION, OBJECTIVES AND PURPOSE OF THE AMERICAN ACADEMY OF PHARMACEUTICAL PHYSICIANS, as stated in the BY-LAWS, January 1, 2000 Article II Section 1. MISSION. To enhance the proficiency of pharmaceutical physicians, the Academy shall promote the acquisition and dissemination of knowledge concerning the therapeutic action, investigation and development of medicines and diagnostics and the protection of the welfare of patients and study subjects. Section 2. OBJECTIVES AND PURPOSE. The purposes of the academy shall be to: Foster the traditional role of the physician as a guardian of health by applying good science and medical judgment to meeting the needs of patients for pharmacotherapeutic uses; Enhance relationships between pharmaceutical physicians and other members of the medical profession; Work to enhance the image and professional recognition of pharmaceutical medicine (as defined in Section 12 of Article III) as a specialty; Assist members in maintaining and enhancing skills and knowledge in pharmaceutical medicine (as defined in Section 12 of Article III); Function as a nonprofit educational organization of physicians who are in pharmaceutical medicine; and Provide a forum for the exchange of medical and scientific information pertaining to pharmaceutical medicine. |
